Welcome, Ponce Inlet jetty fishers!
The purpose of the Jetty Fishing Line Project (JFLP) is to minimize the amount of abandoned underwater fishing line at the Ponce Inlet jetty. Anonymous data will be continuously compiled to determine which areas of the jetty are responsible for the most snags and where underwater cleanup efforts should be directed.
The abundance of rocks on a jetty leads to a high rate of line snags,
which often end with a line breaking or being cut and left underwater.
Estimates for the amount of time it takes for fishing line to biodegrade underwater range up to several hundred years.
It only takes a few years' worth of snagged lines around the jetty to create life-threatening
underwater tangle hazards for animals like turtles and sharks, and it increases the likelihood of future snags,
dimishing the quality of fishing and diving at the jetty.
The above-water beauty of the jetty is not a reflection of how clean and healthy the underwater environment is--the Ponce Inlet jetty needs help.
By reporting the location of a broken line
you'll help maintain the jetty's ability to provide great diving and fishing into the future.
Ways to reduce snagging:
- Don't reel in slowly through rocky areas, especially when using heavy sinkers
- Use split shot sinkers--rocks will snag weights like pyramid sinkers or large sinkers more easily
- Don't leave your line sitting in rocky areas--Ponce Inlet's currents will quickly wrap your line around rocks
